Operation Popeye
Operation Popeye was a classified US cloud-seeding programme flown over Southeast Asia from the twentieth of March 1967 to the fifth of July 1972, intended to extend the southwest monsoon and mire the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The Department of Defense flew 2,602 seeding sorties and expended 47,409 silver- and lead-iodide units, and later told a closed Senate subcommittee that the results were "certainly limited and unverifiable." The programme was admitted in a Top Secret hearing on the twentieth of March 1974, made public on the nineteenth of May 1974, and drove the ENMOD Convention banning hostile environmental modification.

The Jersey Devil and the Leeds–Franklin Printing Feud
The claim under examination is that America's most famous cryptid began as a printing feud rather than a monstrous birth — Quaker polemicists branding the almanac-maker Daniel Leeds a servant of Satan in the 1690s, and Benjamin Franklin mock-prophesying the death of Daniel's son Titan in 1733. The surviving primary record confirms the pamphlet war, the Leeds family's demonisation in print, and Franklin's almanac hoax. It does not contain any colonial-era document linking those insults to a winged creature; that connection is a named modern scholarly thesis, not a documented fact.

Southern Television Broadcast Interruption (the "Vrillon" Message)
On the evening of Saturday the twenty-sixth of November 1977, the sound of a Southern Television news transmission was overridden across parts of Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire by a distorted voice identifying itself as "Vrillon, a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command", calling on humanity to destroy its weapons. Police at Winchester, Post Office engineers and Southern Television investigated, and the intrusion was treated as a hoax carried out with an unlicensed transmitter near the IBA's Hannington station. No perpetrator has ever been publicly identified, and as of September 2026 no UK government or parliamentary record of the incident is discoverable.

Third Man Syndrome
"Third Man syndrome" is the name given to a recurring report from people in survival extremity: the vivid, sustained sense that an unseen companion is present, usually benign, often issuing guidance. The best-attested cases are contemporaneous first-person accounts published by the survivors themselves — Ernest Shackleton crossing South Georgia in May 1916, Joshua Slocum alone in the Atlantic in July 1895, and Frank Smythe near 28,000 ft on Everest in June 1933. Since 2006 neurology has produced a partial mechanistic answer: the "feeling of a presence" can be induced on demand by electrical stimulation of the temporoparietal junction and by robot-generated sensorimotor conflict in healthy volunteers.

GEIPAN and the 1999 COMETA Report
France runs GEIPAN, a permanently staffed, publicly funded unidentified aerospace phenomena unit inside its civil space agency CNES, created as GEPAN in 1977 and publishing its case files online since 2007. Separately, in July 1999 a private committee of retired French generals, admirals and engineers — COMETA — published a ninety-page report, *Les OVNI et la Défense*, arguing the extraterrestrial hypothesis could not be dismissed. GEIPAN remains operational; COMETA was a one-off private association and no official French response to its recommendations has been located.

Project Blue Book and the 1968 Condon Report
Project Blue Book was the US Air Force's UFO investigation office at Wright-Patterson AFB, running from March 1952 until December 1969 and logging 12,618 sightings, of which 701 were never identified. It was closed after a US$313,000 Air Force-funded study at the University of Colorado, directed by the physicist Edward U. Condon, concluded in 1968 that further UFO study was unlikely to advance science — a conclusion endorsed by a National Academy of Sciences panel on the eighth of January 1969. The case files were transferred to the US National Archives in 1975 and are public today.

Terminal Lucidity — the Documented Return of Coherence Before Death
Terminal lucidity is the unexpected return of clear memory, orientation and speech in patients whose cognition had been severely and supposedly irreversibly destroyed, most often by advanced dementia, typically within hours to days of death. It was named in a 2009 literature survey by Michael Nahm and Bruce Greyson, who traced case reports through roughly 250 years of medical writing. Since a 2018 US National Institute on Aging workshop it has been a funded mainstream research programme, and by 2025 to 2026 it had been documented prospectively by direct audiovisual observation and estimated at national scale.

The Lycurgus Cup
The Lycurgus Cup is a fourth-century Roman cage cup, held by the British Museum as object 1958,1202.1, that appears jade-green in reflected light and ruby-red in transmitted light. Analytical transmission electron microscopy in the late 1980s established the cause as silver–gold alloy particles typically 50–100 nanometres across, dispersed through otherwise ordinary soda-lime-silica glass. The physics is settled; how a Roman workshop arrived at the recipe is not, and the analysts' own published position is that the process was poorly controlled and did not outlast the fourth century.

The Moberly–Jourdain Incident
On the tenth of August 1901, two English academics — Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain of St Hugh's College, Oxford — walked from the Palace of Versailles towards the Petit Trianon, lost their way, and later reported passing among people and buildings they believed did not belong to 1901. They published their separate accounts a decade later as *An Adventure* (Macmillan, 1911) under pseudonyms. The surviving primary documents are the published editions themselves; the November 1901 manuscripts were destroyed in 1906 after being copied.

Immaculate Constellation
"Immaculate Constellation" is the name of an alleged Unacknowledged Special Access Program said to collect and quarantine high-quality imagery of unidentified anomalous phenomena outside congressional oversight. It entered the public record on the thirteenth of November 2024, when a twelve-page whistleblower report was submitted to a joint House Oversight subcommittee hearing by the journalist Michael Shellenberger and entered into the Congressional Record by Rep. Nancy Mace. The Department of Defense states it has no record of any such programme, and no primary document establishing the programme's existence has been located.

The Betz Mystery Sphere
In April 1974 the Betz family of Fort George Island, Florida, reported finding a seamless polished stainless-steel sphere roughly eight inches across and weighing 21.34 pounds on their wooded property, and said it rolled, hummed and changed direction unaided. The U.S. Navy examined and X-rayed it at Jacksonville Naval Air Station that month and reported a hollow, non-radioactive, non-explosive, earth-made ball — a Navy metallurgist identified it as a large ball bearing used as a check valve in industrial piping. A National Enquirer-convened panel including Dr J. Allen Hynek reached the same "man-made" conclusion, though the manufacturer was never established and no full Navy report has surfaced publicly.

The Exeter Incident
In the early hours of the third of September 1965, an eighteen-year-old hitchhiker and two Exeter, New Hampshire police patrolmen reported a large, silent object carrying five pulsating red lights manoeuvring at roughly one hundred feet over a field three miles south-west of the town. The US Air Force's Project Blue Book investigated the case, proposed a Strategic Air Command exercise as the cause, then conceded in writing that the officers' post-two-a.m. observation could not be identified. The Project 10073 record card carries the conclusion "UNIDENTIFIED".

The 2004 AFRL Teleportation Physics Study and the Chinese "Gifted Children" Experiments
In August 2004 the US Air Force Research Laboratory published an unclassified, publicly releasable report — Teleportation Physics Study (AFRL-PR-ED-TR-2003-0034) — written under contract by the physicist Eric W. Davis. Its fifth chapter summarised Chinese research from 1981 and 1990 in which "gifted children" were said to move sealed objects through the intact walls of their containers, and recommended a five-year US programme of roughly $1.5 million a year. The Air Force did not fund it, and the document remains the most-cited English-language route by which the Chinese claims entered a US military record.

The Betty and Barney Hill Encounter
On the night of the nineteenth to twentieth of September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported an unidentified object while driving south on US Route 3 through the White Mountains, and could not account for roughly two hours of the journey. The sighting was logged through Pease AFB into Project Blue Book, where the stated conclusion moved through several explanations before settling on "insufficient data". The abduction narrative itself emerged later, in hypnosis sessions conducted in 1963–64.

The 1933 Magenta Incident and Mussolini's Gabinetto RS/33
A body of documents that surfaced anonymously in Italy from 1996 onwards claims a metallic craft came down near Magenta, Lombardy, on the thirteenth of June 1933, and that Benito Mussolini created a secret scientific body — "Gabinetto RS/33" — under Guglielmo Marconi to study it. No copy of any RS/33 record has ever been located in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato or any other official archive; every document traces to a single anonymous sender known only as "Mr X". This archive admits the file as a documented case of disputed papers, not as a documented landing.

The Lubbock Lights
On the evening of the twenty-fifth of August 1951, four Texas Technological College professors reported a formation of soft bluish-green lights crossing the sky over Lubbock, Texas; similar sightings recurred for roughly two weeks and a student photographed a V-formation of lights on the thirty-first of August. The US Air Force investigated the reports under Project Grudge, later Project Blue Book, and its project head recorded that all the sightings bar one radar contact were carried in the files as "unknowns".

The Unlucky Mummy and the Titanic Legend
The "Unlucky Mummy" is not a mummy and was never aboard the Titanic. It is a painted wooden mummy-board, British Museum EA22542, made at Thebes around 950 BC and held in London since 1889; the shipwreck story was fused to it by American newspapers after the sinking, most prominently by the Washington Post of the twelfth of May 1912.

UAP Tranche 5 — The PURSUE Release of 7 August 2026
On the seventh of August 2026 the U.S. Department of War published the fifth tranche of records under PURSUE, the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters. Contemporary reporting describes 41 records spanning 1950 to 2026, the headline item being six videos of cold orbs recorded from an AC-130J gunship over the Gulf of Oman. No source located by this archive supports the widely repeated figure of 517 files.

The Grusch Whistleblower Complaint and the 2023 Congressional Testimony
On the twenty-sixth of July 2023, former Air Force major and intelligence officer David Charles Grusch testified under oath to a House Oversight subcommittee that he had been informed, in the course of official duties, of a multi-decade UAP crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programme kept from congressional oversight. His underlying complaint to the Intelligence Community Inspector General remains classified and unpublished; what exists publicly is the sworn testimony, his written statement, a congressional office's account of the ICIG finding, and a Defense Department Inspector General reprisal report that did not substantiate retaliation. The Pentagon's own historical review, published in 2024, reached findings directly opposed to the reverse-engineering allegations.

Operation Animal Mutilation — the Rommel Report and the FBI Cattle-Mutilation Files
Between March 1979 and June 1980 two official responses to the American cattle-mutilation panic were recorded — a narrowly-scoped FBI investigation limited to Indian lands in New Mexico, and "Operation Animal Mutilation", a federally-funded state inquiry run by former FBI agent Kenneth M. Rommel Jr. out of the First Judicial District Attorney's office. Both concluded the damage was predator and scavenger activity on animals that had generally died of natural causes. The FBI file is public at vault.fbi.gov; Rommel's June 1980 report was never a federal publication and survives mainly through library copies and transcriptions.

On the morning of the sixteenth of September 1994, around sixty pupils at Ariel School near Ruwa, Zimbabwe, reported that one or more disc-shaped craft descended over the scrub beside their playground and that small dark-clad beings with very large eyes emerged. Interviews and drawings were collected within days by a BBC correspondent and a southern-African investigator, and two months later by a Harvard psychiatrist. No government, military or intelligence record of the event was located; the case rests entirely on witness testimony, contemporaneous journalism and private investigator files, and remains disputed.

The Kelly Cahill Encounter
In the early hours of the eighth of August 1993, Kelly Cahill reported that she, her husband and their three children encountered a large illuminated craft and tall dark humanoid figures on the road home through the Dandenong foothills, and lost roughly an hour of time. The case is celebrated for an alleged independent corroboration by witnesses in a second vehicle — but the investigation report said to contain that corroboration has never been released in the thirty-three years since, and no primary document supporting the event has been located.

The Gold-Digging Ants of Persia
Around 430 BCE the Greek historian Herodotus recorded that a sandy desert of northern India, within the Persian empire, was home to gold-throwing ants "smaller than dogs but bigger than foxes" whose spoil the local Indians raided on fast camels. Later Greek and Roman writers repeated and embroidered the account for six centuries. The dominant modern reading, advanced by the French ethnologist Michel Peissel, is that the "ants" were gold-flecked-spoil-throwing Himalayan marmots.

Mokele-mbembe
Mokele-mbembe is a large, long-necked, reptilian animal reported from the swamps and rivers of the northern Republic of the Congo, which some cryptozoologists have interpreted as a surviving sauropod dinosaur. The written record runs from an 18th-century missionary account in 1776 through a much-quoted 1913 German colonial expedition report to a wave of dedicated expeditions in the 1980s. No physical specimen, verified photograph, or government or scientific confirmation has ever been produced.

The 1991 Mexican UFO Wave
On the eleventh of July 1991, during the longest total solar eclipse of the twentieth century, numerous observers in and around Mexico City filmed a stationary or slow-moving object in the eclipse-darkened daytime sky. Journalist Jaime Maussan aggregated the amateur footage on national television within about a week, catalysing a multi-year Mexican UFO "wave"; the leading conventional explanation is that most of the videos captured the planet Venus, which was documented shining at magnitude −4.8 during totality.

The Bashplemi Tablet
The Bashplemi Tablet is a small vesicular-basalt slab found near Lake Bashplemi in Georgia's Dmanisi municipality in the autumn of 2021, bearing sixty inscribed signs — thirty-nine of them distinct — in seven rows that match no known writing system. It was formally described in a 2024 peer-reviewed paper by a five-author Georgian team, who tentatively date it to the Late Bronze / Early Iron Age and argue it is authentic. The script remains undeciphered, the dating is indirect, and several outside linguists have publicly questioned both its age and its authenticity.

The Wilson-Davis Memo
The Wilson-Davis memo is a fifteen-page set of handwritten notes attributed to the physicist Dr Eric W. Davis, dated the sixteenth of October 2002, purporting to record Admiral Thomas R. Wilson describing being denied access in 1997 to a compartmented UAP crash-retrieval and reverse-engineering programme. The document physically exists and was entered into the U.S. congressional record in 2022, but its contents are unauthenticated and its authenticity is contested — Wilson calls it fiction, while other named figures have variously affirmed the account or declined comment.

The physical ensemble is thoroughly documented; the town's epithet "the City of Magic" and the tale that its long perimeter wall was raised in a single night by jinn summoned by two sisters are living folklore, not records.

Project Palladium
Project Palladium was a Cold War CIA electronic-warfare programme, founded around 1960 by engineer S. Eugene "Gene" Poteat, that intercepted an enemy radar's own signal, passed it through a variable delay line, and re-transmitted it to inject fully controllable "ghost aircraft" into Soviet and Soviet-client air-defence radars. Its existence rests on Poteat's own published firsthand accounts and a declassified CIA Studies in Intelligence article; the popular claim that Palladium "manufactured UFOs" is a secondary interpretation Poteat's accounts do not make.

The 1954 French UFO Wave — the Saint-Rémy Landing Where the Occupant "Spoke Russian"
On the night of the twentieth to twenty-first of October 1954, during an intense autumn wave of French UFO reports, construction worker Louis (Lazlo) Ujvari said an armed occupant of a small grounded craft at Saint-Rémy in the Vosges addressed him and, when he answered in Russian, conversed with him in Russian before the craft rose and departed. The case survives only through contemporaneous 1954 newspaper coverage and official questioning; it was never physically corroborated and remains a witness-testimony case.

The Thylacine — Persistent Sightings of the 'Extinct' Tasmanian Tiger
The thylacine, Tasmania's striped marsupial predator, is officially extinct — the last known captive died at Hobart Zoo on the seventh of September 1936 and the species was declared extinct in 1986. Yet reported sightings never stopped: a Tasmanian government file released under Right to Information logs seven fresh eyewitness reports between December 2016 and August 2019, every one officially assessed as "inconclusive".

Bob Lazar, S-4 and Element 115
In May and November 1989, Las Vegas television station KLAS-TV broadcast interviews by reporter George Knapp with a man — first disguised as "Dennis", later named as Robert "Bob" Lazar — who said he had worked at a facility he called S-4, near Area 51, reverse-engineering extraterrestrial craft powered by a stable superheavy element with atomic number 115. Element 115 was later synthesised for real and named moscovium, but the isotopes produced survive for tens of milliseconds, not indefinitely. The claim of a reverse-engineering programme rests on Lazar's testimony alone; the US Department of Defense reported in March 2024 that it found no empirical evidence for any such programme.

The 1983 "Energy Balloon" Consciousness-Projection Document
The widely-shared "1983 CIA energy balloon document" is two records, not one. The build instructions for the "Resonant Energy Balloon" appear in a 1977 Monroe Institute training workbook; the 1983 item is a US Army INSCOM assessment of the Gateway Process by LTC Wayne M. McDonnell, which describes the same technique as a protective measure for anyone attempting an out-of-body state. Both were declassified in the CIA's 2003 release of the STARGATE archive.

The Count of Saint-Germain — the Man Who Refused to Die
The Count of Saint-Germain was a real eighteenth-century courtier, musician, chemist and diplomat of unknown origin who moved through the courts of London, Paris, The Hague and Schleswig between roughly 1745 and 1784, and who let it be believed he was centuries old. His death is recorded in the church register of St. Nicolai, Eckernförde, on the twenty-seventh of February 1784. The immortality is legend; the man, his court activity and the bafflement of his contemporaries are documented in letters, diplomatic records and memoirs.

Stephenville Lights
On the evening of the eighth of January 2008, residents around Stephenville and Dublin in rural Erath County, Texas reported a large, silent, brightly lit object moving at high speed. A civilian radar study drawing on FAA and National Weather Service data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reported an uncorrelated target that at one point tracked toward President George W. Bush's Crawford ranch. The U.S. Air Force first said no military aircraft were airborne, then confirmed F-16 training flights; the object itself was never officially identified.

Erdställe — Europe's Enigmatic Medieval Tunnels
Erdställe are narrow, hand-dug underground passages found across Central Europe and most commonly attributed to the medieval period; their original purpose remains genuinely unresolved by scholarship. The most recent primary-documented example was excavated in late 2025 at Reinstedt in Saxony-Anhalt, where a late-medieval Erdstall was found cut into a Neolithic burial enclosure. The state archaeology office announced the find on the twenty-ninth of January 2026 and set out three competing interpretations without choosing between them.

The Connecticut "Vampire" Burial (JB55, Griswold)
In 1990, gravel quarrying in Griswold, Connecticut exposed an early-19th-century burial in which a middle-aged man's skull and thigh bones had been rearranged into a "skull and crossbones" pattern years after death — an apotropaic act tied to New England's tuberculosis-driven "vampire" folk belief. Brass coffin tacks read "JB55". In 2019 a forensic DNA team identified him, with putative confidence, as John Barber.

Between 1972 and 1987, two overlapping efforts tried to detect a large animal in Loch Ness using sonar and strobe photography — Robert Rines's Academy of Applied Science expeditions and Adrian Shine's 24-boat Operation Deepscan. The instrumentation is documented in granted US patents and the proposed name was published in Nature, but the biological interpretation of every sonar contact remains contested. No primary source in this file confirms a large unknown animal.
